For the past few years, I’ve had the real pleasure of making picks for Mary Halvorson (@maryhalvorsonmusic). Over the course of that time, we’ve gone back and forth—adjusting shape, thickness, tip, and bevel, as well as trying a few different materials—until we landed on something that felt just right for her style of playing.
I’ve long admired Mary’s way of composing and playing guitar—organized, spontaneous, and deeply musical. Because of that, this project has been especially meaningful to me, and I’m grateful to now call her a friend.
These picks are the result of that process. They’re a little different from what I usually make: slightly thicker, with a pointier tip and a bevel designed to support speed, clarity, and articulation, while still feeling warm and forgiving.

… oh, and one side of the pick features the wonderful artwork by DM Stith. You can see more of his work on Instagram at @vermeerier. The artwork comes from the cover of Mary’s latest album, About Ghosts, which is out now on Nonesuch Records (@nonesuchrecords). If you haven’t heard that one yet, I highly recommend it.
The front side of the pick that you receive could be any one of the six drawings. It’s up to chance! Of course, if you order more than one, I’ll focus on variety.
The other side of the pick might feature the Apollo Lyre logo, the word Apollo, or maybe Mary’s name.
