The Wyatt Rice picks
Wyatt really loves this material, and the gold engraving on the WR2 looks especially striking in person. The bevel is the same as the original Wyatt Rice pick, faithfully replicating the handmade wear pattern that’s been such a part of his sound over the years. While it’s something Wyatt likes to pull out from time to time, it’s also an important part of the tonal palette he reaches for — a pick that balances character, playability, and authenticity.
Specs
Thickness: 1.21mm
Right-hand bevel
Width: 1.22in / 31.1mm
Height: 1.15in / 29.4mm
(WR1 = Black Plastic, WR2 = SunStorm Casein)
Wyatt first learned how to make this kind of pick (by hand) directly from his brother Tony. Back when he was just a teenager, Wyatt still recalls exactly how they shaped and beveled them — the same style Tony was using in the early ’80s (think Church St. Blues / Backwaters). Over time, Tony’s technique evolved, and his picks became slightly more rounded at the points.
Tony passed that knowledge down to Wyatt, and Wyatt eventually passed it along to me. It’s a humbling lineage.
After collaborating with Wyatt for over two years, these WR2 picks are designed to replicate his handmade shell picks. At the outset, Wyatt sent me a few of his own hand-made shell picks so we’d have the same reference point. With those in hand, I visited plastics distributors around the state, testing and flexing cutoffs of high-performance plastics at 1.2mm thickness. The result: one material stood out above the rest — PEI, the “good stuff,” in the right grade.
The bevel mimics the exact wear pattern found on Wyatt’s own picks, giving a natural feel and sound. The slightly lopsided triangle shape is intentional, preserved without CAD corrections to honor its authentic character.
